We're In!! We moved over most of the week and weekend of July 27/28th and then closed on our 'old' house on Monday the 29th. It seems strange not living in Shoreview after 25 years. We're in the 'new' house now, but still have a ways to go to finish the rest of the house.
We've got the hardwood floors installed and finished now in the kitchen, nook and back hallway (tedious!- all 45 deg. angles!!). We found a small wood mill in Wisconsin that custom cut 'character grade' white oak for us (lots of knots and end grain) in 3, 4, and 5" widths for a 'country kitchen', wide-plank look.

We put down 4x6 timbers to outline the driveway area. We'll be putting concrete down momentarily for a parking area up near the garage and the front entry sidewalk. After that's down we'll add a fresh layer of trap rock in the driveway and turnaround.

Gutters are now installed. Finally, we can properly channel all that rainwater we've been getting.

The sidewalk and concrete driveway are now in. The slot drain and receptacle for the gutter spout are going to be nice this winter. After the crushed trap rock was laid down and leveled with a bobcat, Mark compacted it with his SVX. Those wide tires are good for something else besides corners! It looked like blacktop when it was done. It has since been rinsed to a lovely shade of blue-gray by the rain.
| |
We wanted some kind of hard surface for a patio area under the deck, so we put down some 'slate-look' 16" patio stones from Menards (where else!?).
| |
Some the elevations at the back corners of the house needed a little correction, so we put in some small retaining walls.
I figured I better finish the vinyl deck railing before it got too cold out (too brittle to work on), so it's all done now. All that's left now is installing the screening material.
The Schrock hickory, shaker-style kitchen cabinets are all mounted and waiting for the granite countertops to be delivered and installed.
Just some final trimming left to finish the kitchen. You don't realize what a 'luxury' a kitchen sink is until you've had to live without one for a while.
Mark got the french door to the Master Suite installed and the nic-nac shelving behind the kitchen peninsula.
We've got some of finish work done on the doors and windows. I've updated the Master Suite Entry doors picture above. The Garden Window is now finished, too.
We've got all the window jamb extensions finished and installed. We decided to do them in White Oak (like the kitchen/nook flooring). The guy that did our kitchen plank flooring gave us a great deal on 3/4" solid white oak planks for the jamb extensions. We were going to do it in plywood, but we would have probably had to settle for red oak. He's just finished our casings and should have our base moulding done soon.
The granite countertops are now installed! The company we found to install it did a terrific job (at a great price, too).
We even were able to work in a piece for the laundry sink area to match with the kitchen counters.
Mark put together some custom pendant fixtures over the kitchen counter & sink area to match our other lights.
The gas fireplace is now installed in the living room. Just in time to make it cozy for the impending winter. The slate hearth will match the entry stone. Mark got around to installing the beautiful leaded glass window we discovered at our first home on Edmund Ave. We've enjoyed this window for many years and now have a great place to display it in the living room bay.
The slate tile has now been installed in the entry and back hall. It's a gorgeous multi-color with greens, reds, orange and grays. We have to wait about two or three weeks for the adhesive to fully cure before we can grout. (Can you tell I like stone? Wait 'til you see the Master Bath!)
Here's an interesting view from the second story landing.
We've completed all the window and door trim. All the casings and baseboard are done in white oak (like the kitchen and nook floors). We decided to use 'rosette' trim staying true to the style of the house (rather than mitered joints) and then I realized you can't buy white oak rosettes (all the 'manufactured' rosettes are done in red oak), so I had to make about 150 rosettes and 70 base blocks.

Ta Daaa!!!!....... It's Done...... almost 400 square feet of marble and granite in the Master Bath. We used 'Pacific Pewter' marble with 'Blue Pearl granite accents (including the vanity top). The shower is marble from floor to ceiling and is odd space with six sides, two shower heads, a seat, and two recessed nooks for shampoo, etc.. Sharon spotted a heavy glass, frameless shower door in a hotel we stayed in and HAD to have something similar for our shower. The whole bath is a real eye-popper.

Here's a couple of views of the custom door between the Master Bedroom and Bath. I had to take apart a bi-fold door to make a louvered french door. All white oak!
The stair system and balcony railing is now done. We had a finish carpenter help with the layout and installation.
The 'Powder Room' (off the kitchen and back hall) is now done. We did it with a 'Victorian' look with tile and fixtures. (BTW- The black accent squares under the chair rail were cut in by hand.)
Carpeting has been selected and will be installed shortly. One more bathroom to be tiled; some baseboard and trim yet to do...... It's just about done(!!!).................
I'll keep adding more pictures as it progresses. Stay tuned..................
